practical phd

a transparent source for all things PhD

ZAWADI RUCKS-AHIDIANA

I am an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York Albany campus starting in fall 2019.  I hold a PhD and an MA in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, a MPA from New York University, and a BS in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Maryland. Prior to graduate school, I worked in evaluation research for 8 years at a non-profit and academic research center.  I love my research, but mentoring and teaching are what give me life and let me give back.

WHY PRACTICAL PHD?

I started practical PhD to provide a space to share all of the practical information about the PhD process from start to finish and beyond that I have accumulated over my time in non-academic research, graduate school, a postdoctoral fellowship, and starting a tenure-track faculty position.  As a person who is transparent about sharing resources and information, I often get email and verbal requests for advice, guidance, and information. All the requests for information made me realize there is a hunger for more practical discussions around the PhD process, thus Practical PhD came into existence as an idea and then this site. My goal is for Practical Ph.D. to extend my reach beyond my network and university to help more potential, future, and actual PhDs in their journey. All opinions expressed on Practical Ph.D. are my own.
